This Model Eye was developed in 2005 as a three dimensional computer video reconstruction of the eye, and the diseases that affect it. This is an invaluable resource for Ophthalmic Education as it illustrates eye anatomy and diseases far more clearly than text or static images.
There are innumerable eye diseases that can be demonstrated with similar graphics. The model at present outlines accurately the damage caused by Glaucoma – a disease which reduces peripheral vision and is often not noticed by the patient until irretrievable damage has occurred. This computer model is able to demonstrate that damage, educating health professionals to detect disease at an earlier stage, as well as impart a greater understanding of how the disease affects people.
Ongoing work continues to construct images of other ophthalmological entities, which will become an essential tool in ophthalmological training and education.
The model eye graphics developed to date have been snapped up by the ophthalmic industry and serve as a fundraising initiative to further the scientific endeavours of the Capital Vision Research Trust.
